Rachel Sunnyvale asked:

Please help me understand what I am doing wrong… My daughter rarely wears something more than a few times before the item is too small. I know she’s growing quickly, but I think the clothes are shrinking too. To prevent shrinking, I wash her clothes in cold water only and I dry them on gentle. Short of line-drying, which I don’t think is feasible right now, what else can I do to preserve her clothes? Thank you!

Washing them in cold water is correct. Try drying them on a low or no heat setting if you do not want to hang them dry. This should help….. Unless she has clothes that are say 100% cotton and then I think you are going to get shrinking. Good luck. :)

Look at the labels, too. If a garment is 80% cotton (or other natural fiber) and say 20% polyester (or synthetic man-made fiber) you can tell that the fibers will or can shrink by 80% because natural fibers shrink while man-made fibers do not. To combat the shrinkage factor, toss the garment into the dryer until most of the wrinkles are gone and the garment is not fully dry then air dry it the rest of the way. Gently stretch the garment back into shape before hanging and while the fibers are damp and they won’t shrink back either. That way the shrinkage factor slows down because the fiber isn’t shrinking each time the garment is laundered. Hubby wears a lot of 100% cotton polos that are notorious for shrinkage and this method works for my boy who is already done growning.
