Our family will sit for one soon, but we can’t decide on the clothes combo and the background. For instance do we do khaki and white or black and clothes? Do we have a stark white background?
it isn’t my pic to make the decision. it will be my parent’s decision, but they want the uniform look thing.

It really depends on the type of mood or personality you want to portray. But wearing white, at least on top, is a bad idea, especially if you are having a white background. It will make you look like people are missing body parts! I suggest a gentle neutral background and a choice of two colors for tops (for example, some people could wear blue and some red) and jeans or something everyone can do for bottoms. (You could even have some girls wear jean skirts.) I bet the place you are going to will have some suggestions too.

Darker earth tones look better in photographs. Blues, greens, browns and blacks are best, in my opinion.

Pinks and reds (especially on caucasians) will make skin tones look pale.

Solids are best. Avoid things with patterns, and avoid pastel colors. Both will draw the eye away from the faces in the photo.

In my experience, white can go either way, depending upon the background. If the background is colorful and busy (say, yellow and red fall leaves) white tends to make the subjects pop out of the background. If the background is plain, I don’t like white as much, as it’s bland, and tends to compete with the faces of the subjects for attention.

ewww, don’t go for the corporate drone institutional uniform look.

If it’s a formal sitting, then just let everyone wear their best clothes.

If it’s a casual sitting, then let everyone wear their favorite outfit.

I’d encourage you to look at this resource for starters:

I like black on black…. example: black clothes on the black background… Although grey is also a good color to go with… as background.

Or dark colors on a cream colored background. (Purple, blue, green, brown…)

    Anything natural is good. IMO.

Hope it turns out well. :o)
